Where we find them

We do not wait for applications and we do not rely on job postings. We search these kinds of pools, and we do not name the employers we search.

  • Crews at peer contractors, service businesses, plants and facilities that do the same work
  • Public license and certification lookups, where the trade has them
  • Apprenticeship and training program graduates who are now working
  • Veterans with related military trade training
  • Referrals from tradespeople we have already talked to

Industries that hire these trades

How the search runs

Measuring, testing and inspecting

This family covers people who verify that work is in the right place and made of the right stuff. Survey party chiefs and layout technicians set control and mark lines. Materials testing technicians sample and test soil, concrete and steel. Special inspectors check structural work against code. Nondestructive testing technicians examine welds and components without damaging them. These roles carry real responsibility, because their sign off affects safety and cost. We recruit working people, qualify them in conversation and brief employers in writing.

The value of these roles is trust. A contractor builds from the points a surveyor sets, and an owner relies on the test result a technician signs. People in this family are paid for accuracy and honesty under schedule pressure, which is why we ask each candidate about a time they reported an unwelcome result and how it was received.

Titles we fill

We fill Survey Party Chief, Survey and Layout Technician, Construction Materials Testing Technician, Special Inspector under the International Code Council, and NDT Technician. Survey Party Chief, Layout Technician, Materials Testing and NDT have dedicated role pages with alternate titles and screening detail. Special Inspector is covered within this family and can be requested by name. If your firm uses another title, describe the daily work and we will map it.

Licensing and certification distinctions

Surveying separates licensed land surveyors, who may certify boundaries, from field crews who work under their direction. Materials testing technicians often hold certifications from industry bodies, such as concrete field testing and soil testing credentials. Special inspectors hold credentials issued under the International Code Council, and jurisdictions may require specific ones. NDT personnel are certified by employers under a written practice, and some also hold portable credentials. We state each as something to confirm for the job location.

Where these trades work

Employers include land surveying firms, engineering consultancies, testing and inspection laboratories, general contractors, owners with in-house quality teams, and industrial inspection companies. Field work means early starts, weather and travel to project sites, while laboratory work is steadier. Layout technicians on a building project work with superintendents daily. We ask clients about the work location, schedule and equipment first, because candidates compare employers on field conditions and vehicle policy.

Vehicle policy, per diem, overtime and travel to remote sites vary by employer, and candidates ask about them first. We encourage clients to state those terms clearly in the posting.

How we qualify people

We ask about the largest project each person worked on and the hardest error they caught. For survey roles we ask about instruments, software and checking methods. For testing we ask about sampling procedures and recordkeeping. For inspectors we ask about code editions and how they handle disputes. For NDT we ask about methods, levels and written practice. Employer-run drug, background and driving checks apply to candidates who consent, and we do not run them.

We also ask about their comfort working near active equipment, traffic and weather, and about their own checking habits before they hand off a number.

Permanent hire by default

Every search targets a direct hire placement onto your internal staff. We strictly avoid temp labor or third party payroll arrangements to ensure full control remains with your firm. You manage the candidate and maintain total authority over their daily work duties and onboarding. This direct bond is vital when your staff must certify data or uphold safety standards on high risk project sites.

Sources and talent pools

The main pools are field crews and technicians at comparable survey, engineering and testing firms, and inspection staff at jurisdictions and private agencies. Technical school and engineering program graduates with early work experience form another pool. Military engineers and surveyors can fit. Experienced leads and working owners considering a new role are another source. We describe pools by type only and never name employers, and we approach working people directly.

Career paths and where to go next

Entry surveyors often reach party chief roles before pursuing licensure through formal education. Testing staff frequently transition into lab management or materials engineering positions. Special inspectors commonly advance toward plan examiner or senior review duties. NDT technicians may aim for Level III certifications or quality control director posts. Review the following professional paths and provide your specific job requirements for our team.

Employers who describe their instruments, software, vehicles and training support honestly attract stronger candidates, and we help write that description so it is specific and fair.

Questions

What does a surveying, layout & field technicians hire search cost?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. Fee terms are set out in the signed agreement.

When is the fee due?

A fee is due only when you hire a candidate we presented, as set out in the signed agreement.

What if the hire does not work out?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

How do you verify candidates?

Where a license or certification is required for the work, we confirm it with the issuing authority for the jurisdiction of the work. We discuss the scope in a live conversation. Any MVR, drug or background check that the role requires is handled by the employer with the candidate's authorization. We do not administer those checks.

Do you recruit union or open shop?

Either. Tell us which applies. Union referral rules and signatory agreements stay between you and the local, and we scope the search around them.

Is the search confidential?

Yes. We do not name your company to a candidate before they agree to a conversation, and we do not contact a candidate's current employer about them.

Do you recruit nationwide?

Yes, for local and traveling roles. We search by scope, not by city page.
